STUDIO: Charette in class design exercise concepts

PSYCHO/SOCIO ATTACHMENT MODIFICATIONS

This concept is based on the idea that this chair is for children. Knowing how much children like to draw and scribble on things, the chair can become their 'canvas'. Far better than on the walls if you ask me. The low price of this chair means that there is no concern in having a child doodle all over it with a set of crayons. The crayons would be available for purchase from IKEA.

This concept caters for users who wish to give their furniture a facelift without spending too much or replacing their existing furniture. Being an unsealed chair the user can simply purchase the desired lacquer varnish from IKEA and stain the chair(s) themself.

In this concept when the users circumstances change and they may want to upgrade or whatever they can take for instance 4 chairs out of a set of 6 back to the IKEA factory where they will recycle and convert the chairs into a table to match the remaining 2 chairs. This promotes environmental sustainability through recycling as well as embodies a story in the piece.

This concept is again for children. Utilising the disassembly qualities of this product, the user can dismantle the chair so a child can paint each individual part a different colour. When the chair is reassembled the child will be attracted to it because of the colours as well as the fact that they had created it.

This concept involves the user purchasing a different backing to the standard 2 panels. This option allows the user to insert a photograph into the back panel behind a piece of perspex. The range of chairs become a photo album. Users would be attracted to the product because the visual cues of the photographs makes them feel happy.

Because people are attracted to cities and metropolis and also their history and where they originated from, this concept is based on developing a range of modifications where each chair could be given a theme of a city. Utilising laser cutting and screenprinting techniques could make this concept quite economically feasible. This same concept could be taken further into the thematic territories of football sides, countries, etc.

PHYSIO ATTACHMENT MODIFICATIONS

In this concept the user can purchase attachable cushions from IKEA available in a variety of patterned textiles. The user attaches the cushions using a simple velcro wrapping/strapping system. This concept could also be evolved to a point where the user could design their own personalised patterns for the textiles adding an element of psycho/socio attachment as the user is attracted to something they created.

This modification is designed for elderly or less mobile users of the chair. I believe the chair is very much designed for children and being tall I find it very uncomfortable. People sitting in the chair who have issues with mobility could have some difficulty standing up again. This modification adds height and also allows for the user to rock forward slightly, inclining the chair and making it easier to stand up. Rubber traction makes sure the chair does not slip backwards when it is tilted which could cause injury.
