Whenever I'm shopping my reasoning for not buying certain expensive clothes is I don't like spending money on things I could do myself... And I think there'd be a majority of graphic designers out there at the moment who can sympathise with me on this one...

Here we have the controversial new logo for the city of Melbourne. The product of $91,000 worth of research (!!!) and $148,000 devoted to developing the logo leaves me feeling confused. And as you can assume those figures have left federal parliament fairly pissed off. (My graphicist roommate would have happily beat out this gradient soup in 2 hours for you if you payed his rent for a couple of weeks) No offense to Landor Design, who have an impressive portfolio of work, but with a price-tag like that you'll have trouble scoring the job of designing the monogram for Donald Trumps' silk pyjamas.
Admittedly the old logo was a bit drab and dated, however the new logo reminds me of something out of Hollywood Boulevard, premier night for Transformers II. Personally, it certainly doesn't reflect the humble, European-city vibe that I think Melbourne should be going for. (Sorry but even Brisbane's advertising campaigns are more emotive). Maybe next time try using white space and serif typefaces as a starting block. Leave all the pretentious shit to the city that does it best, Sydney.
