Harry Wakefield on Design in 2009

So I'm running a little late with this post. I found this little something a while ago and only just got around to posting it now. Harry Wakefield is a fellow design blogger however is involved with the far more prestigious MoCo LoCo. When asked what he thought of the evolution of design and architecture in 2009 he said that 2009 was the year when sustainable design and architecture became simply design and architecture. I really like this quote, and it sheds a lot of light on what defines design in the current era, and the dominant trend that is influencing both functionality and aesthetics alike. It also provides a reliable platform for designers and architects embarking on new projects. It tells us that sustainability is 'the new kid on the block'; a new variable in the criteria for 'good design', a prerequisite for success.
Sustainability is no longer a peripheral element in design, a considerable onus that must be included so a design is not rejected and passed off as arrogant. Products have adopted particular aesthetics that have an environmentally cohesive appeal, as has the packaging. With the sustainable revolution picking up momentum exponentially, environmentally sound design speaks of sophistication, class and knowledge. With a plethora of examples at hand, I choose to use reference the demise of the Hummer truck. In a rapid trend change, the Hummer has changed from a 'cool' design object, to an ignorant vehicle only driven by wankers. The humble bicycle has taken its place as an object of desire, symbolising care for the environment and for ones self. I hope the bicycle continues to gain popularity as it has throughout the best part of 09, and eventually become the symbol of the sustainable revolution.
So seemingly, but unsurprisingly, I have diverged from the original course of this post, and will decide to draw it to a close out of fear of a sleepless night and 5000 word essay. Until next time.
