As we are delivered information about environmental issues through the media, communication design and ultimately product design, people are becoming more environmentally aware, searching for alternative lifestyle choices that will essentially reduce their 'carbon footprint'. Recently, particularly in Sydney, we have seen an insurgence in the popularity of riding bicycles as apposed to driving automobiles. Amongst young people who have a predilection for hipster cult icons there has been a lot of people turning to the fixed gear/single speed bicycle. Their appeal for simplicity is matched by the cultural significance, referencing such very underground cult icons as the New York City bike messenger.
I happened across this project which appears to be only in the US at the moment, but I know that shipping internationally is viable. Being a fixie rider is about exclusivity, and Nada Bike follows that basis. By subscribing for a fee of $100, you are send a naked track bike frame. It is then up to you to build the bike from scratch, finding old bits from the back of the garage or buying brand new.
I'll leave it to the website to explain the rest, and I implore you to check it out and read the blurb at the top. Here are 3 very important links to check out:
1. Nada Bike
2. Project M
3. Refresh Everything
